A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background assisted us locate the video.

We are analyzing images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.

Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
