Fury Explodes as Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Rebuke
Individuals from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood industry are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the shocking passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Developments and Detention
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was established at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.
This is a appalling and vile statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the remarks. She referenced previous comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
A number of Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health within families.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared others in his party to defend the comments.
Reiner's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of another individual.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
