Israelis observe second anniversary of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks advance
Citizens have gathered throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking representative involved in the discussions indicated that an evening round of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the deal.
He commented that the negotiations are "tough and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Talks
- A lasting ceasefire
- The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- Future management of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No place seems like home any longer and until all the hostages are released none of us will be secure."
"When we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
In front of the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Activist one woman explained: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israelis prefer the conflict to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and zone areas and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Health Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis reported two more dead people had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medics stated.
