Jurgen Klopp says a return to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, has suggested that returning someday is an option. The 58-year-old, post a game-changing nine-season tenure which brought continental glory and ending the club's long wait in 30 years, now holds roles in a global football capacity within the Red Bull organization and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Supporters’ Hopes and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
The club claimed the Premier League in the previous campaign, yet numerous supporters who revere Klopp would embrace the possibility that he may eventually return. In a wide-ranging interview, he told the podcast host: “I declared I refuse to lead a different club in England. So that means if then it’s Liverpool...yeah. It's plausible.”
“I’m 58, which suggests the choice could be mine in a few years, it's uncertain. Must I choose now? In that case, I'd stay away. But thank God, I don’t have to do that. I'll wait and observe what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Questioned regarding the specific conditions would need to occur to bring him back to management, he confessed he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “I'm not entirely sure, I enjoy my current role,” he said. “I don't crave being a coach; I avoid standing in the rain for lengthy sessions; I don’t miss going to media briefings multiple times weekly or having 10-12 interviews each week.
“I don’t miss the dressing room in that context, however, dining out alongside the squad having a nice chat, that’s nice. Success was frequent meaning regularly great spirits around the place. I still have Van Dijk's laughter in my ear to illustrate.”
Commending Arne Slot
He spoke highly regarding Arne Slot, crediting him due to the changes that won the league last term. They've been defeated four in a row in all competitions after a summer spending spree, but he rubbished the idea it could be the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker such as Wirtz, you will all eat your words if spoken against. A remarkable prospect. [Hugo] Ekitike, incredible player. They have a strong thoughtfully assembled roster. No need for concern over the club, they'll bounce back.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
He shared movingly on the loss of Diogo Jota, a player he signed while in charge, and the effect on Liverpool. The forward lost his life in a car crash alongside his brother recently.
“How do you replace somebody like Diogo? It goes beyond his footballing ability, it's his character. I struggle to conceive the team environment missing him. I find it difficult to discuss about it. A devastating blow for his teammates also. No one within the club will ever use it to justify results but it is the situation. You walk in a dressing room where he was omnipresent. Dealing with that on a personal level is difficult. Impossible.”
