Much like Storm Claudia tore through the northern region the night before, the home side swept United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three goal win for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Setbacks for United

This scoreline represented consecutive Women's Super League setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them seven points off the table toppers with their championship aspirations severely dented.

United’s ability to manage domestic and continental soccer with a small roster has been a hotly discussed subject since they secured entry to the UCL. Reviewing the schedule, it always seemed this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this ability. Regrettably for the opposition, they seemed weary from start to finish, the landmark win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

The United manager had sought to make changes with a handful of adjustments. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

City, in contrast, have no such fitness issues. The City coach made a single alteration from last week’s win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from injury.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to gather for the United boss and his squad from the first whistle. This was a show of the quality from City whose dynamic attack played with and tore United open with a superb initial 45 minutes performance that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

Opening Threats

The omens came early when Miedema used her strength to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Her passes were causing problems and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.

United had a number of sorties ahead, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the flanks but they could not challenge Yamashita. City, on the other hand, dominated possession, taunting their opponents and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Triple Strike

They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A delivery to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh goal from a cross of the term.

The most obvious change came from the United manager at the break as Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Former Manchester City player Park came nearest, striking the woodwork, but the visitors were offensively poor and failed to register a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the hosts. Previously unable to defeat any team who placed above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and United to put them in a commanding standing after nine matches.
