Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
