McLaren's Lando Norris Claims Maiden Formula One Drivers' Crown in Abu Dhabi Despite Verstappen's Grand Prix Win.

Through an exhibition of brave driving, the McLaren driver has sealed his maiden F1 world title by achieving third place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Third place was all that was required for the British driver, despite the fact that Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.

The driver performed precisely what was necessary in an incredibly high-pressure contest at the Abu Dhabi track, including a number of bold overtakes, with impeccable work from both the driver and his team.

An Important Feat for British Motorsport and McLaren

In taking his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh British driver to do so. It also brings to an end the team's drivers’ championship drought, which dated back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren last secured the championship double back in 1998.

This marks a stunning turnaround for the Woking-based outfit, from a low point in the middle of the last decade when they twice finished ninth in the standings. The revival has been helmed by boss Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has delivered an efficient outfit with a very fast car.

A Tale of Two Teammates

Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had been the favorite for a large part of the season, there was obvious frustration at faltering in the later races. A series of poor performances and mistakes, including crashing out in Baku, proved costly. However, he finishes the season having demonstrated he is also of champion caliber. To have been so competitive in only his third season in F1, with multiple victories, remains very impressive.

Max Verstappen was also exceptional to take the title battle down to the last race. He did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but having come back from a significant deficit in August, he did not quite have the points to catch Norris, ending up just two points behind.

Sealing the Deal with Ruthless Execution

He secured his success with ruthless focus to win the championship that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the previous two races. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable strategy call in Qatar.

This represents no little achievement for the 26-year-old in his seventh season in F1, each one with McLaren. He stuck with the squad even during some difficult periods, believing they would come good. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a hugely impressive job to stick at his task, keeping his composure and confidence during periods under the cosh. Having lost the lead to Piastri earlier, he still worked at maximising the car's potential.

The Title-Deciding Race

At the start, Verstappen kept his first place through turn one, but the three title leaders avoided contact. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was feisty and made a spectacular move to pass the outside of Norris to take second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under pressure from the Charles Leclerc. The first round pit visits saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he overtook rivals within a lap and displayed great composure in his race craft.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars in one swoop, moving up to fourth and catching Verstappen's teammate. The rival team instructed their driver to hold up Norris, leading to a breathtaking assault where Norris went up the inside line, nearly completely off the track.

The incident was looked at by the race officials, with several nerve-wracking laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris was decided. This bold move unimpeded was crucial to his title fight.

Diverging Fates

As Norris became the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in form between the two was pronounced. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal ending to a dismal season with Ferrari.

Making his debut with the Scuderia had been greeted with excitement but produced what was comfortably his worst season ever, ending up sixth in the championship without a top-three finish. He has looked jaded in the closing races and will look to reset over the winter.
