New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
