The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
