TikTok Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug
An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.
Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles privately for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
This medication is an investigational injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Several experts stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.
Some content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.
Service Response and Material Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down violative content and prohibited related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization said it was committed to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Activities
Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.
After minutes of joining one group, a seller posted contact information, where most transactions occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.
Product Information and Costs
Within these groups, messages display black plastic packages with postal service stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should last, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Actions
A representative for Telegram said it regularly monitored harmful material on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to recent cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has previously encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may expose users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
