Wealthy businessman Jared Isaacman has been voted in as the next chief of NASA, capping an extraordinary nomination process where the President nominated him, withdrew it, and then renominated him.

Isaacman, an private pilot who was the first civilian to perform a spacewalk, is also the first agency head in decades to come entirely from outside public service.

For a significant portion of the space community, the legacy of his tenure will be determined by one key benchmark: if NASA can land people to the Moon ahead of the Chinese space program.

Trump has emphasized a ambition for the US to create a permanent lunar base, both to allow for harvesting materials and to serve as a launching pad for journeys to the Red Planet.

Legislative Approval and Political Dynamics

On Wednesday, the Senate confirmed Isaacman's nomination with a bipartisan vote.

The President initially pulled Isaacman's nomination in May, pointing to a "comprehensive examination of past connections".

At the period, the president was openly clashing with the SpaceX CEO, one of his major contributors, with whom the nominee has a working relationship.

Isaacman says he is now fully behind the administration's goal to harvest the moon, putting him at odds with Elon Musk, who has argued that going to the Moon is a detour from the journey to Martian exploration.

Vision for NASA

In the present global space race, nations are vying to utilize the moon's resources.

“Now is not the time for hesitation but a time for action because if we fall behind, if we make a mistake, we may not recover, and the implications could shift the balance of power here on Earth,” Isaacman told the Senate committee recently.

The billionaire entrepreneur sees introducing more industry players as key to achieving those goals, according to a recently leaked document laying out his plan for the agency.

In his testimony, he stood by the strategy, which he drafted when he was originally put forward, but clarified it was a developing document.

His welcoming of multiple providers could also create a conflict with Musk. Last week, Isaacman commended the award of a significant agreement to Jeff Bezos's company, which is one of the few rivals of SpaceX.

In the document, he suggested the agency should increasingly partner with universities and academic institutions, casting the agency as a "force multiplier for science".

He pointed to the upcoming deployment of the Roman Space Telescope as a cornerstone project.

"Should we be close to something extraordinary - like launching Roman - I will leave no stone unturned to make it happen, even using my own resources if that's what it requires to produce the scientific results," he stated.

Wealth and Career

According to analyses, his wealth is valued at around $1.2bn, made mostly from his payment processing company and the sale of his firm that trained pilots and managed a private fleet of military aircraft.

The position of agency chief will be his initial foray in government service, a contrast to the last two people who served as head of the agency.

He will take over from Sean Duffy, who has acted as interim NASA chief since the summer.
