What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people were killed and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
